En septembre 1953, l'importateur aux États-Unis de Daimler-Benz, Max Hoffman, arrive à convaincre la maison-mère à Stuttgart, de tabler sur la conception de deux nouveaux modèles de véritables voitures de sport tirés du très sportif coupé 300 SL (gullwing), qui, remportant la Carrera Panamericana, avait obtenu une attention très spéciale de la part des Américains.
Par ailleurs, Hoffman souhaitait compléter une gamme Mercedes-Benz jusqu'alors très conservatrice. Pour cela, la maison mère, en collaboration avec sa filiale américaine, décide de créer deux cabriolets, une version de la 300SL gullwing en cabriolet et une version plus petite, la 190SL, dites de « tourisme sportif » afin d'offrir « un usage quotidien pratique ».
La 190 SL présentée ici est un modèle de 1956, restaurée intégralement à très haut niveau en 2008.
Au moment de la restauration il a été décidé de remplacer le moteur d'origine qui était cassé par un modèle plus moderne et plus puissant.
Le choix s'est porté sur un bloc de Mercedes 190 des années 80, clin d'?il au modèle du même nom, il a été dépourvu de son injection au profit de deux carburateurs Weber pour ne pas dénaturer l'essence même de ce modèle ancien.
Le moteur d'origine a été conservé et sera livré avec la voiture.
L'accroissement de puissance est bienvenu sur ce modèle qui, ainsi, peut prétendre à des performances dignes de ses lignes nobles et sportives.
La carrosserie présente des panneaux parfaitement alignés et ajustés, le moteur, la boite de vitesse à 4 rapports d'origine, les trains roulants, les suspensions et les freins fonctionnent parfaitement.
